WEEK 3: AURORA
Aurora (from Sleeping Beauty) is often considered one of the most passive Disney princesses. She spends only 18 minutes on screen, delivers almost no spoken dialogue, and falls asleep awaiting rescue.
Is Aurora really the main character of Sleeping Beauty? If not, who is? And, if so, is she more than just a passive damsel in distress?
The Story Club 
I would argue that the fairies are the main characters. Aurora is obviously important — she’s an object of both profound love and deep hatred — but an object nonetheless.

Yes, I usually go with the fairies too. I think Aurora’s arc is more symbolic than realistic.

I always saw this as a classic “good versus evil” story between the three good fairies and Maleficent. Phillip (armed by the fairies with pretty much Biblical weapons to fight the “powers of Hell”) and Aurora are just the humans caught in the fray.

Yes, I agree. I do feel like the biblical stuff (which I agree is absolutely in there) does come a bit out of left field at the end since the three fairies, up until that point, had been sort of doddering old grannies rather than fairy godmothers. But I agree with your take, overall.

I’m not sure if my initial comment went through (had to reset my password. lol).
I don’t recall where I heard it, but someone once pointed out that some of the stories that Disney turned into princess movies were originally about the prince and his quest, not the princess. It made sense to me at the time but I don’t know that I’ve read the original Sleeping Beauty so I am not sure if it applies here.

I’m not sure that the questing stories are the same as the princess ones. But I agree that Prince Phillip has a much more developed character in the Disney Sleeping Beauty than Aurora does!
